Duties and Responsibilities:
Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit and steward donors, assisting them in building relationships with the Medical Center and supporting its mission through their gifts, particularly bequests, life income gifts, transfers of real property, securities or non-traditional assets and any other deferred or current giving methods. The candidate will take a donor-centered approach, consider the donors' motivations for contributing, their connections to care providers, their family needs, assets, tax consequences, optimum gift planning vehicles and prudent planning strategies.
Provide prompt responses to gift planning inquiries from donors and/or their advisers, engage in conversations with donors and furnish clear and understandable written explanations, gift illustrations and gift agreements as needed.
Provide regular stewardship services to VUMC Legacy Circle members through personal stewardship plans that offer opportunities for continued engagement with VUMC. Stewards existing planned gifts and solicits other giving as appropriate. Encourages donor stewardship through the Legacy Circle with event participation and coordination.
Demonstrate a strong and up-to-date knowledge of the laws and regulations related to charitable giving and charitable gift planning, including testamentary gifts, life income gifts (charitable remainder trusts), testamentary substitutes, retirement funds, deductibility issues, gifts of real property, investment vehicles, pledge rules, DAFs, and more.
Collaborate and provide guidance, training, technical expertise, coaching and assistance in the gift planning process with various constituencies within the Medical Center including Development teammates, physician partners, volunteers, board members and executives.
Build and maintain relationships with VUMC physicians to identify new grateful patient donors.
Participate in the ongoing enhancements and expansion of gift planning team's operations through close work and cooperation with the directors and staff of Development Communications, Events, Development Finance, Prospect Management, Stewardship, Data and Analytics and others. Interact with VUMC's Office of Legal Affairs, Finance department and other Medical Center leaders and staff.
Preferred qualifications include 5-10 years of charitable gift and/or estate planning experience, working knowledge of all the legal, tax and financial matters related to charitable giving, willingness to travel, ability to work independently, commitment to a collegial work environment, and exceptional analytical and communication skills. An advanced degree and fundraising experience in a health care or higher education setting are preferable.
