This Social Work Associate (Housing Specialist) functions as a Public Housing Specialist for the Medical Center's HUD-VASH Program. The HUD-VASH program is a collaborative effort, supported through HUD Section 8 rental assistance vouchers and VA's provision of intensive case management services. The primary component of the program is VA case management services, designed to improve veteran's health and mental health, enhancing their ability to remain stable, housed and community-integrated. Duties of the Social Work Associate (Housing Specialist) are to include, but not limited to: a. Assist Veterans in their search toward a house or apartment that will meet the qualifications of a Public Housing Administration (PHA) Inspector. b. Coordinate briefing sessions and seminars for program participants and landlords. c. Participate in the interviewing process of applicants to determine eligibility and a needs assessment. d. Interact with the HUD-VASH Case Managers, Veterans and PHA staff in order to secure placements expeditiously once the Veteran has received a voucher. e. Establish lists of landlords interested in HUD-VASH Veterans as potential tenants, developing property lists of safe, decent, and stable housing units. f. Obtaining pre-inspections and other inspections. g. Present Veterans with HUD-VASH vouchers to landlords and negotiate various aspects of leasing such us security deposits, utility bills and monthly lease amounts. h. Counsel Veteran applicants on their eligibility and assists Veterans and landlords in the leasing process at the PHA, as well as monitor the units under lease. i. Prepare reports, maintain records, and data bases as-well-as perform other related work as required by the HUD-VASH Case Managers and the Veterans who are enrolled in the program. j. Prepare office and marketing materials to mail or hand-out in order-to educate prospective landlords and Veterans about the HUD-VASH program. k. Follow up with all Veteran applicants as they search for permanent housing. I. Maintain good public relations with landlords and developers in the community That may be willing to rent to a Veteran with a HUD-VASH voucher. m. Monitor overall program operations and keep staff informed of all new units that are available. The Housing Specialist should also take Veterans out to see units that are available for rent and report the outcome of these visits. n. Have a driver's license and be able to transport Veterans in station vehicles. o. Have a current CPR card. p. Completes appropriate documentation including entering progress notes into CPRS. q. As a member of the homeless team, will participate in the Community Homeless Assessment, Local Education and Networking Group (CHALENG) preparations and meetings, the Stand Downs, the Point-in-Time Count, and other community outreach and education efforts of the homeless team.
