The incumbent is directly accountable to the Laboratory Manager, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine Service. Incumbent facilitates team or unit processes by working in collaboration with team members to ensure that tasks, priorities, goals and achievements are coordinated with management. Performs a broad range of laboratory procedures including testing and tasks of the medical laboratory technologist occupation. In addition, performs advanced and complex laboratory procedures; recognizes deviation from expected results; analyzes and corrects problems using scientific principles and redirects staffing as needed to manage workflow. Maintains and documents the optimal functioning of laboratory equipment. Uses, calibrates, identifies malfunctions, repairs, schedules, and performs preventative maintenance of laboratory equipment. Diagnoses deviations in test performance due to instrument malfunction; initiates vendor service calls when needed. Adheres to practices and regulations governing biosafety and biosecurity in the workplace. Identifies discrepancies, solves problems and presents solutions. Answers inquiries regarding test results, methodology, test specificity and sensitivity, and factors which may influence test results. Evaluates and implements new techniques and procedures in the laboratory in terms of equipment, method comparison, and establishment of reference intervals using statistical methods and theoretical knowledge. Incorporates principles of educational methodology in the instruction m1d training of new employees and students in the laboratory. Communicates effectively and courteously while working as a healthcare team member. Provides excellent service as defined by healthcare providers, patients, staff and laboratory management. Gives direction and guidance using underlying principles of laboratory testing. Encourages and facilitates a positive working environment with all laboratory staff always. Recommends methods for achieving work goals, objectives, and management strategies. Day-to-day supervision of highly complex test performance, instrument/method validations and calibrations, quality control, and instrument maintenance. Responsible for monitoring test analysis results, specimen examinations, and meeting turnaround time expectations to ensure acceptable levels of performance. Ensures corrective action is initiated when test performance deviates from established performance specifications. Ensures orientation, training, and competency assessment of staff. Recommends personnel actions as needed. Recommends and monitors quality management activities/metrics, including monthly reports to the Laboratory Manager, P&LMS, corrective action to exceeded quality metrics prior to the monthly quality assurance meeting; setting priorities and completing assigned tasks by established deadlines.
