Expected Starting Salary: 50.80 - 64.91 SUBFUNCTION DEFINITION: Bioinformatics applies biology, computer science, data science, and statistics to analyze and interpret biological and clinical data.
Scope: May manage reporting personnel; making decisions regarding; and taking responsibility for recruitment; selection; on-boarding; development; training; discipline; termination; evaluation; salary; payroll; and/or retention. May maintain and/or create position descriptions and/or performance evaluation criteria.
REPRESENTATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES
Informatics Serves as expert in data curation/management across multiple projects for various types of biomedical data (e.g., genomic, clinical, imaging, sequencing) in various formats (e.g., flat files, relational and non-relational databases). Develops metadata management strategies and oversees implementations and integration across multiple projects and with national and international data standardization initiatives. Develops project and institutional strategies for secure data storage, management and metadata management, and contributes expertise in existing technologies and new technology development. Provides expert-level knowledge in data characterization, annotation, quality assessment and discovery.
Data Analysis Contributes expert-level knowledge in the development and evaluation of robust pipelines for curating, processing and analyzing biomedical data of various types (e.g., genomic, clinical, imaging, sequencing). Provides strategic and scientific direction to efforts to develop new tools to support complex data management tasks (e.g., sequence alignment, variant calling, inter-sample comparison, patient matching/linkage) across multiple groups. Designs, develops and evaluates scalable, searchable and secure data structures, utilizing and expanding data standards. Incorporates institutional resources and 3rd party software into specialized analysis workflows for the team and clients. Designs computational infrastructures to controls the flow of data and information for studies. Maintains expertise in public and proprietary bioinformatics tools. Contributes to the development of institutional data and analytical standards and operating procedures based on scientific literature and best practices. Provides leadership to both technology and scientific teams.
Requirements Gathering & Analysis Serves as biomedical data/workflow subject matter expert within and beyond the organization. Contributes expert-level knowledge to analysis of data/user workflows. Leads problem-solving and solution evaluation/design efforts. Leads the analysis of current environments and ensures alignment of solutions with user workflows and institutional and industry standards as well as national and international standards bodies.
Software Evaluation & Development Provides subject matter expertise and strategic direction to bioinformatics software evaluation and development efforts. Ensures alignment of software development/selection with scientific aims of projects and programs. Serves as product owner/champion, devising and executing strategies for institutional adoption and optimized utilization of software solutions. Reviews project charters and implementation plans to ensure alignment with user community needs as well as alignment with institutional data strategy and industry best practices. Provides both technical and scientific leadership to bioinformatics software development efforts.
Publication Serves as staff-level data scientist across multiple projects. Develops and leads the execution of analysis plans. Authors scientific manuscripts and other publications. Participates in scientific meetings including as presenter. Works closely with biostatistics department on the production of publication and presentation materials.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
Required:
Masters degree in related field. May require clinical license, certification or training
7+ years of work experience in a related job discipline OR equivalent combination of education and experience

Unique Skills:
Data Analytics Possess expert knowledge of SAS (or similar), EDC and other information systems (such as Medidata Rave, REDCap, Oracle, MySQL).
