Under supervision of Imaging Program Administrator and Interventional Radiologist', the Interventional Radiologic (IR) Supervisor has direct oversight and responsibility of personnel and services in accordance with established policies and procedures for various age groups of patients, assists with the performance with diagnostic procedures in order to assist Radiologists in the diagnosis and treatment of illness. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology, Radiography (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), or Mammography (M) duties performed independently, as applicable. Advanced certification indicates that the incumbent can operate independently and has demonstrated specific clinical competency in the appropriate specialty and taken and passed the designated examination. Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). Loss of Credential. An employee in this occupation who fails to obtain certification within two years, or who fails to maintain the required certification must be removed from the occupation, which may also result in termination of employment. Grade Determinations: GS-11 Technologists working in this special assignment may function as vascular interventional (VI), cardiac interventional (CI) and/or cardiovascular-interventional (CV) technologists which use specialized equipment to perform diagnostic angiographic procedures and complex vascular and nonvascular interventional and therapeutic procedures. This specialty requires additional knowledge of vascular systems and major vessel anatomy. The technologist must be knowledgeable in the specialized equipment employed for digital subtraction systems and interventional procedures. The technologist administers contrast media under the supervision of the staff radiologist and confers with the radiologist to establish requirements regarding contrast agents, vital signs, medications, and physiologic monitoring to perform procedures. IR technologist must be knowledgeable in digital imagining and PACS. Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-10) directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies needed to provide services as a supervisory radiologic technologist. Assignments: All assignments above the full performance level, the higher-level duties must consist of significant scope, complexity (difficulty), and range of variety, and be performed by the incumbent at least 25% of the time. Employees at this level are fully functional as an advanced DRT and carry out their assigned tasks independently. The incumbent functions as section supervisor for a group of advanced DRTs at the GS-10 level and below, which may include support staff. The incumbent evaluates new products and equipment and makes recommendations to the supervisor concerning upgrades/new purchases that would improve operations. The incumbent develops and maintains protocol manuals for procedures performed in the section. The incumbent is responsible for implementation and adherence to all safety practices and policies for the section. Equipment is set up properly for fluoroscopy within the parameters directed by physician. Digital image acquisition is performed at appropriate filming rate. Annotations are correctly performed. Panning is provided, and technologist is constantly present and available for table movement. 3D imaging is performed and analyzed accurately. Vessel sizing/stenosis is accurately performed. Imaging systems include but not limited to interventional suite, general radiology digital fluoro, DR, CR, surgical mobile C-Arm, CT, and portable radiography. Properly inspects, prepares and operates accessory equipment, i.e., integrated interventional ultrasound, thrombectomy unit. Efficiently and effectively provides procedural support for a variety of patient procedures: Prepares an interventional radiology case prior to patient being placed in the procedure room (equipment, supplies, etc.?). Assures appropriate cleanliness of all equipment and procedure room prior to patient arriving for procedure and sterile field being created. Average room turnaround time is 20 minutes. Utilizes proper equipment to safely assist in patient transfers from stretcher or wheelchair to radiographic table. Prepares oral and injectable contrast and other chemical mixtures, as necessary, according to facility policies. Follows prescribed protocols required to perform procedures. Administers contrast material, under the direction of the physician, according to protocols. Utilizes safe practices to verify correct dosage and rates are administered. Maintains adequate level of supplies. Sets up and positions patients and provides proper immobilization devices/techniques. Selects proper technical factors on an individual patient basis. Observes patients during procedures and reports complications or unusual events. Demonstrates flexibility in response to unexpected changes in work volume, emergencies, and staffing and / or scheduling changes. Develops and maintains a good working rapport with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other personnel within the facility, to assure that the department services and activities can be properly maintained.
