Summary: Prepares, evaluates, and reports routine gynecological and non-gynecological cytological material. Assists in teaching and may help to evaluate new specimen processing procedures.

Responsibilities: Informs team manager of unusual problems, questions or complaints. Recognizes basic malfunctions in instruments and/or test procedures. Follows general guidelines to recheck results or correct basic malfunctions. Receives, prepares, stains gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens. Prepares reagents, stains and solutions. Screens and evaluates gynecologic specimens. Refers cases appropriately. Performs acceptably on proficiency surveys, proficiency tests and MD review of slides. Screens and evaluates non-gynecologic specimens. Performs acceptably on proficiency surveys and MD review of slides. Correlates patient clinical data with cytological diagnosis. Maintains quality control and patient follow-up programs. Assists in fine needle aspiration collection and evaluates the adequacy of the specimen, if needed. Assists in the maintenance of FNA supplies and cleanliness of FNA working areas. Assists in the development of policies and procedures. Participates in the CAP accreditation process. Accurately enters all required information in the computer system (I.e. logs, diagnoses, patient histories, billing, etc.). Diligently checks for errors in other people's data entry. Carefully checks patient identifiers.
