The Duke University School of Medicine Department of Radiation Oncology invites applications from experienced basic/translational researchers for a full-time academic appointment at the level of either Associate Professor or Professor to build a basic science research program that may include elements of translational research and clinical correlations. Radiation Oncology physician-scientists are encouraged to apply, and would receive clinical appointments in the Department of Radiation Oncology and Duke Health Integrated Practice.

Of particular interest for this position is the interface between cancer, radiation therapy and complementary fields such as immunology. This position offers the candidate the opportunity for development of an outstanding research program, supported by many ongoing research efforts in the Department and Duke Cancer Institute, including the Radiation Oncology and Imaging Program of the Cancer Center Core and disease-site specific SPORE grants, and access to outstanding core facilities with advanced technologies such as single-cell and spatial transcriptomics.

The successful applicant will have the opportunity for academic growth by joining a dynamic group of clinicians, physician-scientists, basic scientists, medical physicists and clinical/translational researchers.  Successful applicants can also be considered for secondary appointments in the Department of Pharmacology and Cancer Biology, Medical Physics Program or Department of Immunology, with Masters, PhD and MD/PhD student training opportunities.

Responsibilities will include building and maintaining an outstanding research program; teaching and mentoring of students, residents and postdoctoral fellows; limited academic administrative roles; and for MD and MD/PhD applicants, clinical responsibilities equivalent to one day per week. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and lead a basic science/translational research program with clinical relevance for radiation therapy of cancer producing peer-reviewed funding and high-impact publications.

Appointment at the level of Associate Professor or Professor in the Duke University School of Medicine will be commensurate with experience and achievements in cancer-related fields of scientific research.

Suitable candidates will have PhD, MD or MD/PhD degrees and post-doctoral research experience, with an established track record of independent, funded research. MD and MD/PhD candidates will be Board-certified in Radiation Oncology.
