Carilion Clinic (CC) and the Cardiovascular Institute invite applications for the position of?Assistant Chief of Cardiology, Western Region, based in Christiansburg, Virginia. This is an exceptional clinical and leadership opportunity to guide a team of cardiologists and advanced practice providers serving a growing regional market.
Anchored at the?Level III, 146-bed Carilion New River Valley Medical Center (CNRVMC)—an award-winning acute-care hospital—the Western Region provides comprehensive inpatient and outpatient cardiovascular services across a large geographic footprint.
The Western Region supports a busy outpatient practice with full-spectrum diagnostic capabilities, including transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiography, nuclear cardiology, cardiac CT, cardiac MRI, and vascular imaging. The region also maintains a high-volume device management program, including pacemaker and ICD interrogations, remote monitoring, and close collaboration with electrophysiology.
Additional services include exercise and pharmacologic stress testing and streamlined referral pathways to interventional cardiology, electrophysiology, heart failure, and advanced imaging programs within the Cardiovascular Institute.?
CNRVMC has a 24/7 STEMI program and a cardiac catheterization lab that performs over 1,000 cardiac catheterizations per year.
The Assistant Chief will also provide leadership and oversight for cardiology practices in?Giles, Wytheville, Galax, and Hillsville, ensuring seamless clinical operations, high-quality care, and excellent patient access across all sites.?
The position reports directly to the?System Chief of Cardiology, ensuring alignment with systemwide clinical, operational, quality, and financial priorities. The Assistant Chief will help advance standardized care pathways, monitor key performance indicators, and promote responsible resource stewardship. This role also plays a critical part in strategic planning, recruitment, and program development, supporting sustainable growth and high-value cardiovascular care throughout the Western Region.

Qualifications
MD/DO with Board Certification in Cardiovascular Disease
Minimum 10 years of cardiology experience
Minimum 2-3 years of progressive leadership experience in an academic setting
Academic rank of Associate Professor or higher
Demonstrated excellence in communication, organizational leadership, and team development
Experience building integrated, collaborative care, education, and research programs
Experience with graduate medical education preferred
